Exhibition at Midlands Arts Centre

Exhibition at Midlands Arts Centre

Our new Grayson's Art Club exhibition will open at Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) in Birmingham from December 2022 until April 2023. The exhibition will feature artworks chosen by Grayson and guest celebrities during season three of the show.

During each episode, members of the public, established artists and celebrities have been invited to make artworks in response to the different themes – in the current series, the focus has been on Love, Heroes and Heroines, Normal Life, Inside my Head, Holidays and The Future.

Grayson Perry said:

“MAC in Birmingham is the perfect venue for our third Art Club exhibition. I always have a great time in this city and suspect it may be the coolest place in the UK.”

Artworks submitted by the public have covered a wide variety of mediums, such as photography, painting, textiles and sculpture. These artworks will feature in the exhibition at MAC, alongside pieces by Grayson and Phillipa Perry, and celebrities such as Birmingham’s very own Joe Lycett – who made an appearance in the final episode which aired on Friday 22 April.

Joe Lycett said:

“MAC is one of the most beloved and important cultural institutions in the Midlands, and thus the world, and to know that Grayson is bringing Art Club here has made me truly overjoyed. I'm delighted that Birmingham is being put on the art map in this way but also annoyed about how difficult the parking in my local area will be.”

Further contributing celebrities include Bill Bailey, Jo Brand, Joe Wilkinson, Mawaan Rizwan, Katy Wix and Dame Prue Leith for ‘The Queen’ special episode. Works from this Platinum Jubilee special of Art Club will also be included in the exhibition.

This year, MAC celebrates its 60th anniversary as a pioneering arts centre in Birmingham, with the mission to inspire the artist in everyone. The charity offers a busy programme of exhibitions, theatre, live events, cinema, creative courses and special events for the local community and beyond.

Deborah Kermode, CEO and Artistic Director of MAC, said:

“We are so proud to be presenting this unmissable exhibition at MAC as a joyful finale to our 60th year celebrations. Grayson’s Art Club shows us the incredible impact that creativity has on wellbeing – which is at the heart of the work we do at MAC as a place for making, doing, and exploring. We are thrilled to partner with Channel 4 and Swan Films to bring artistic talent from across the nation to our wonderful city.

Shaminder Nahal, Head of Specialist Factual at Channel 4, said:

“I can’t wait for the next Grayson’s Art Club exhibition to open at MAC and for people from all over the UK to head to Birmingham to experience the fantastic artworks in real life. Grayson’s Art Club is about bringing us all together through our shared enjoyment of art - and I’m thrilled that such a vibrant and dynamic organisation is hosting the next show.”

Grayson’s Art Club will open at MAC in early December until spring 2022. A range of specially designed merchandise will be available to buy from MAC’s shop (both in-venue and online), along with a programme of community engagement events. Further details, including booking information for the exhibition, will be released in the coming months.
